History
St. Munchin’s Catholic Primary School, located on Albany Highway
Gosnells, was officially blessed by His Lordship, the Auxiliary Bishop,
Dr. L. J. Goody on the 25th of January,1953. Father Carmody was
the first Parish Priest and Sisters Julian Clarke and Gabrielle Blake of the
Sisters of Mercy ran the school. Thirty five children were enrolled.
The name of the school was
taken from St Munchin, who
was the Bishop and Patron of
Limerick City and Diocese, in
Ireland during the fifth and
sixth centuries. His feast day
is the 2nd of January.
In 1978 the Albany Highway
site was sold to the City of
Gosnells for a City Library and Community area.
The new school
commenced at the present location in September of that year. The
official Blessing and Opening ceremonies were performed by the
Most Reverend R. J. Healy and Senator the Honourable F. M.
Chaney on the 19th of November, 1978.
In 1992, the school was extended to include Pre-Primary classes
while in 1999 a Kindergarten was opened to cater for four-year olds.
Extensive developments to buildings, grounds and facilities have
taken place to provide for a rich learning environment for the
children.
Throughout its history St Munchin’s School has aspired to reflect the
influence of the Mercy tradition by imitating the life of Christ and His
love for others. Our vision statement for the school has been
influenced by our history.
